Eight years, three months and two days…that’s how long she had been a member of his command. Today, that ended. Brigadier General Jonathan (Jack) O’Neill would no longer be her commanding officer. Today, in a brief ceremony, command of the SGC had been passed on to the hands of another—a stranger. There were a lot of strangers in the SGC now. Not like before—faces were always changing here—it was a fact of war and of reassignment, but these were new people, strangers were replacing the backbone of the SGC. She knew it would never be the same again, and Sam couldn’t help but feel sad—sense the loss of something great.

Sam Carter felt empty...totally drained...as if a black hole had sucked her very being from her. She had lost her father--stood silently, holding his hand and watching as his life faded from him, Selmac unable to heal the wounds he and Jacob had suffered. Later, she had said goodbye to her dream--watched it die as she was confronted with the reality that she couldn't marry a man she didn't love, clinging instead to the vague whispered promise of "I'll always be here for you."

"Dismissed" came the words of General Hammond. "Report to the infirmary. Colonel, get that hand tended. We'll debrief tomorrow at
0900hrs."

SG-1 handed their weapons over to the SF's and headed out of the gate room. "Come on kiddies, I'm not going alone to face Frasier and her big `ol needles," Jack quipped at his team.

The mission had been pretty routine. No goa'uld. No aliens of any kind. Boring earth type flora and fauna. Boring trees. Boring rocks. But a sharp rock had put a pretty nasty cut on the palm of Jack's hand when they sat to take a break on the long hike back to the gate.

Arriving in the infirmary, SG-1 split up—each going into their usually cubicles, Colonel O'Neill in the first, Major Carter the second, Daniel the third, and finally Teal'c the fourth. Dr. Frasier took a quick look at the Colonel's hand and called for a nurse to scrub the wound while she moved on to do Sam's post mission exam.
